I raised four boys, each one played football and I warmed the bleacher every Friday night. They started when they were 6 years old. The season actually ends, but football in it's own way is year around. I did love your essay.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I grew up in Germany, a military brat, and there were no American stations. We had a tiny little black and white TV, and once in awhile we watched Speedracer or Tom and Jerry in German. When we moved back to the U.S. when I was sixteen we had one station that got those three channels. Often there was a family fight over whether we were watching football (dad) or Dynasty (kids).
Those were the good ole' days, because now? I can't even watch TV because I have no idea how to turn it on....too many remotes..all over the place..one for the TV, one for the DVD player, one for Karaoke machine, one for the cable box...I'm clueless...
My husband is the "Lord of the Remote." Pfffttt...I'd rather review and write instead of watch anyway...I do love "Law and Order" though. :)

Life today is more electronic than natural...even friends are made of pixels and not flesh.
I agree about football, and my mom always watched every game she could find... loved those tight pants and cute butts, I think. But my hubby is not a sports fan, so our house is safe. :)

I remember when we had one television as well. Now in my fifties I have six in my house. When it is just me in the house, not a one is on. I value the quiet as it lets me think. I believe that those who can't live with out the television being on all the time are the ones who are afraid to think. Nice job on this.

Now that it's 2013, I spend my weekday evenings watching shows like M.A.S.H., Bewitched, and I Dream Of Jennie on ME TV.
Not to mention, I've also recently watched The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Hogan's Heroes, and My Three Sons.
Thanks goodness for oldies stations - since most newer shows on TV aren't worth the time to watch. JW :-)

Hi Debbie!! You are a kindred spirit. I despise football. I think it's the idiocy of the fans that ruins it for me. You would think it's the end of the world if a team loses. And in high school, kids actually had fistfights at rallies. Or pep-sessions...INSANE. I had to just bug out and stay in study hall. I liked playing softball and kickball tho. I could outrun ALL the other kids, boys included up until 8th grade. I was fast. I should have been in girls track. OH well. This is a great and timely post Deb. I could not agree with it more. x.
