Very well written free verse poem. The passion, fear, and difficulty of the lover's decision is absolutely palatable in piece. The tension the author creates is exquisite. The rhyming and flow are very good. This should do well in the contest.

Thanks Val. It was a very difficult decision...one that took me many years to reconcile the guilt. But as I said, the decision was the right one.

Thanks Michael for your review of my poem. It was a very hard decision to leave my first husband. He was a "good" man ...just not the right one for me. I had dated him since 9th grade and married him at 17. We were just too young.

Thank you Deorre for your kind review. I should have told the reader the name of the picture. It's " Ring of Fire". I don't know if you know the old Johnny Cash song but the title of the picture made me think of the song and the words rang true for my poem.

I went on utube and listened to the song. The picture was perfect. :) Deorre

Cool, it was written by June Carter Cash about her love affair with Johnny.

To me, love like life is not an ephemeral thing but it also is not infinite. It is a moving, transforming thing that goes its natural course. So you are lucky and blessed that what was sown so many years ago has matured well and slow. I envy that you have come by faith so easily. -Ekim777

Yes, I agree with you Ekim777 I am a very blessed person to have found the true love of my life. It took breaking hearts and hurting others but I have been forgiven. Thank you for your kind review.

This is a really good poem! It's interesting because it sounds at first like the narrator is talking to a lover, but then it sounds like it might be God.
I especially like this stanza:
Will I find redemption?
In your loves' embrace
Or will I be lost forever
without mercy or grace.

Very good work!

A very sensitive and well-written free verse. Lots of care taken with phrasing, giving the words an easy to read flow. Most enjoyable. Good luck in the contest.

whew! while I'm awfully glad you did because 39 years is a LONG time ... but why "redemtpion, mercy and grace?" These qualities sound more like atonement, rather than something you seem from a true love?

Why redemption, mercy and grace? I didn't get them from my lover but instead from God himself. I grew up in a very religious home. To be unfaithful to my first husband was to me
a very grave sin. However, my love was so strong for the new man I threw everything away to be with him and hurt many good people including my first husband. In the long run, time has healed many things and I am friends with my first husband today. Yet, I would never encourage anyone to go looking because I spent many years with lots of guilt and pain. However,
I am still in love with my 2nd husband and God has forgiven me.

This is a terrific poem, and it's good to know that you're still together. This reminds me of the song that says it's sad to belong to someone else when the right one comes along. I guess you weren't gonna have it that way! LOL

Excellent piece, my friend. :)
