I so understand yielding to dreams unfulfilled. To looking back and seeming nothing for the efforts of a lifetime. If only there was some way to make this world a place that all things were possible.

The reality of becoming a man is working with what you can, and realizing the difference between reality and fantasy...thanks for this insightful review, my friend,

A painting of different stages
of ones life put into a mural of
words that fall with a bit of
poignant tinge of opportunities
missed, of taking different forks
in the road of life.
Artistically and poetically
mastered with brush strokes
of reality.
Well done

Another thought provoking poem. Dreams do go unfilled if the yearning is not strong enough to pursue them. And then those dreams are replaced with new hopes and desires. Best line: "No one deserves anything without earning." Thanks for sharing.

This is another very interesting poem. I enjoyed your free style of writing and describing life exactly the way it is.
"No one deserves anything, without earning it" was my favorite line. Bill

No one deserves the rewards of life without earning. that is for certain. But thats what happens in this country. the wealth gets passed down from generation to generation and they never have to work a day.

"In the dark night of the soul, it is always 3:00 a.m." I'm so glad that morning often brings more hopeful thoughts, to young old. This is a good poem. Best regards, Jeanie Mercer

Thanks, Jeanie, for another lovely review. Indeed the morning often brings better thoughts, twilight can be so...depressing.

This free verse flows well and the story is sad. The man realizes he is no too old to live out his dreams of travel.
He feels he has lost all his youthful want to do things that can provide good tales. Every one has stories whether they traveled or not.

The picture of the sunset is metaphorical to the sunset of ending of his life.

Keep writing

Thomas,

You write beautifully. And, yes, a young man's dreams are soon enough gone and no longer make sense in the scheme of things now. Great writing, young man.

Hi Thomas,

Forgive me, but thank God I'm not in my twenties anymore! Such angst. I enjoy being 50.

Now, I liked your poem. The best part was the stanza where you wrote about something specific, the cigarette.

You might want to try more of that, writing about specific things. Like Robert Frost's poem, "The Path Not Taken."

Just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing!

smiles,

deb

You're not the first to suggest this - perhaps I need to avoid being overly vague all the time? :)

Thanks for the review, my friend,

Yeah, too many people forget that poetry is, first of all, a communication from the author to the people. It's written for the audience, not for the satisfaction of the author. And if your audience can't understand it, it's not really poetry but a journal entry. Or so I've been told moons ago about some of my work. lol :-)

Hi-

Oh, I see the problem now... you are majoring
in History, when all along you should have
majored in English... both of them are
completely made up and false, but English
is the funner of the two.

Nice, bleak poem.
