The sad thing, in any war, is that there are really no enemies except the feelings between the governments running the countries involved. That is why it is so sad when you hear about young men and women who end up being suicide bombers because they have been indoctrinated from an early age. Your story has been written exceptionally well, and was a pleasure to read.

What a good read this is.
It provides detail that appears most knowledgable.
Your two characters, Tran and Luc come across as real and your dialogue is top class

An interesting look at "the other side" of the war. It's hard to understand why war has to go on in the first place. Your story is well written and well edited.

Thank you very much for reading and your comments. Certainly can't argue with your question of why war. Regards, Bill

Very nice writing. There is always hope even in war. The fact that a soldier let someone who was obviously not a threat get away was no big surprise to me. It happens all the time!!

Nicely written piece, and if you are talking about the last phases of the "action", it sounds quite plausible. I am always amazed at stories of who lives and who dies in situations where all should be dead. Good job. Be well. Larry

Bill,
this is a magnificent war story from the view point of VK Soldier. Your characterization is spot on. Your descriptive writing is excellent in your story. I was riveted all the way through. You show and don't tell. Splendid imagery because the story came to live in my head as I read. You realistically portrays the hells of war in your story. In your story you used many good lines; "That way, they could move out of the tunnels and relieve themselves in the jungle. While that had dangers of its own, it was infinitely better than spending time at the indoor latrine." It's funny all soldiers, regardless of the army are in a world of shit, pardon my French. How funny Fung-one aka Eddie Mable waved at Tran. I love your story because you've effect established a setting, conflict, and a resolution. I'd recommend your war story about nasty war duties to reviewers as a must read for the shit on latrines, pun intended. Thanks for sharing your terrific story and have a wonderful day.
Melissa.

Thanks Melissa - especially for reading both stories. I would have loved to write as one post, but most people on FS will only stay with you for about 2000 words or less. Always warm regards, Bill

LOL!!! "I suppose you were a pretty good pig farmer, but at the end of the day, you were still a pig farmer."

I wasn't expecting the ending here, with the American waving them on. This Eddie Mabe, is it similar to the Japanese edemame?

Well done!

Hi Bill,

This is a finely crafted story and a perfect 'brother' piece to your first story. I was totally engaged in it from the beginning to the very end. Your imagery is spectacular and put me right behind Tran and Lac. The American soldier could have easily killed them but chose to let them go, a perfect uplifting end. Well done, chey
