JUDIAN JAMES-This poem moved me to tears...I was reading it and had to stop a moment and come back to it...by the time I reached the last line to see you looking in the mirror and seeing the reflection of your mothers face outline in your own, my tears came down...this is sooooo very beautiful...I have never known my own mother because I'm adopted and being that I feel for daughters who have experienced the love that they have for the one that you can only get once and who shows true love, my heart is weak...I thank you so much for writing this and loving her so....excellent writing...

This is a great tribute to a great loving mother. You evoked a lot of emotions with the words you chose to put this piece together. I was drawn in by the superb allure of this beautiful poem. Very well done and more power to your pen.

Oh Jude, this is so beautiful. What a wonderful woman your Mom must have been. Everything you write about her says more about her character.
Even without reading your author notes, and without even reading the heading of the poem, I just knew this was about your Mom from the first stanza. Perhaps it was the memory of that recent poem about gardening in a skirt, when you said powder blue had been her favourite colour.
The image of you seeing her in your mirror and in your own hands was so real. I have done that on occasions myself.
But how lovely that the reflection gives you comfort.
A delightful and oh-so-moving poem, every word of which I loved.
Sally

Thank you Sally. This is a wonderful review. You'd like "Defining a Woman" in my portfolio. It's Mom's and my story. Jude

It is a nice personal poem. These are the types of poems that help clear the soul of things that are needed to be said. It is a nice tribute and a pleasure to read so close to mother's day. Good luck in the contest

Hello Judian,

This is a very nice ode to your mother. By focusing on your eyes you describe the everlasting bond between the two of you. Touching and unique.

Thanks so much Ray. I look so much like her through the eyes, but when I smile, I'm my dad, through and through! Jude

A wonderful tribute to a woman that lives on in her most talented daughter. It is nice to pause and make to this reflection.

Thank you D. My mother was so wonderful, as was my dad. I'm one of the fortunate ones who had a charmed childhood. Jude

This is utterly touching, Jude. I especially relate to the line: "My mirror tells me truthfully that you live on." I often see my mother looking back at me--a striking phenomenon. I see her too in some of her great-grandchildren, so even earthly immortality lasts a long time. Best regards, Jeanie Mercer

I've written several pieces about how characteristics are passed on through the generations. I look so much like Mom through the eyes and I have my dad's mouth and smile!! Thanks so much Jeanie, Jude

Beautiful, Jude - loving and tender and crafted
exquisitely. I like the ending stanza repeating
the mirror image. How lucky you were to have
your Mom for so long and to continue to see
her each day. This is so worthy of a six but I have none.
Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day and the best of luck
in the contest.

This is a wonderful poem full of emotion that I truly share.
It feels complete that it starts in the mirror and ends in the mirror. love the phrase "in shape and shade." The verse about holding the stars, carrying stars in your pocket are ring of Mary Oliver. Wonderful, wonderful!
