Self confidence

Thread Started September 30 at 5:56PM

I rarely give three-star reviews, but I did in this case. I choked on my coffee when the reply came back from the author as follows...

"The whole poem is better than any other poems ever written in my opinion."

Too bad. There's potential there and with help and practice ...
I used to get reviews like that. In fact, from YOU for one, Steve. Even though I did have JUST as big an ego, I wasn't stupid. LOL Curse the reviewer, smile, and then LEARN the great stuff they just told you. A great formula. :))

Ha! That is exactly why the rating system cannot and will not ever work in such a diverse milieu as FanStory. When Humpty Dumpty should have a violence warning and this is the best poem ever. :))

That's so absurd it is amusing, and sad. Hopefully, that person will eventually mature...

Gotta love the absolute confidence, though. I imagine this person writing back to publishes sending rejection notices with a note just like that one.

Oh well. I think we just need to consider the source of some of the rude comments.

Gotta love the diversity of the group, right?

Its plain and simple, whoever it is in the wrong place...These are the kind of comments you just have to laugh at...that may be hard, but its what they deserve...

Here's my two cents worth.

Having read everything in the poet's portfolio (there's not that much there) as well as reviews of the work, it doesn't take long to notice most of the reviews are 5-star ratings providing very little in the way of depth, with only a couple of in-depth reviews giving any constructive criticism and correlative stars.

The vast majority of reviews simply feed into and support the poet's (skewed) viewpoint that the work is already "excellent", in no way lacking, and certainly in no need of editing.

On a positive note - I have been heartened of late to see more constructive notes being left in reviews, and less adherence to the unspoken "5-star rule" that has taken over the site. I hope it is the start of a new trend toward honesty in reviewing.

Over the past few weeks, I've been giving many more fours. There are a lot of new and inexperienced writers on the site now. I feel the need to give the four and explain myself - give constructive criticism and point them to style manuals.

I've also started adding a footnote to my signature;

~patty~
4 stars=Good
5 stars=Excellent

I want to know my fives mean something instead of seeing mediocre work getting the same thing

And of course the same rules should be applied to all, not just the newer writers...
