My family calls me
“Overdo Di”
Even I can tell you
The reasons why:
A pie for Thanksgiving?
Sure… but you must mean four
Along with two trifles
And fruit salads galore
Let’s take it easy
For Christmas this year
Right. But two trees
Aren’t enough, I fear
No, there must be a tree
In each downstairs room
Christmas must be everywhere
To erase winter’s gloom
Just one gift for each this year?
Of course. We don’t need much fare
Except… matching pajama sets
No! You wouldn’t dare!
Five guests are coming?
I promise not to fuss
Just new towels and linens
For their stay with us
And Christmas stockings
For even the pets?
Well, of course, silly people
Don’t live with regrets!
You knitted ten beanies?
And gave them away?
Everyone needs warm gifts
On Christmas Day
Mom! What are you doing
To those outside doors?
A fresh coat of paint
Then I’m polishing floors
Some might say that
I’m wired this way
And I’ll be overdoing
‘Til my last dying day
I’m neither young
Nor am I too spry
But I’ll keep giving and doing
‘Til the day that I die…
Admittedly, I sometimes
Am heard to express
That this planning and doing
Can result in some stress
I sometimes worry that I’ve
Gone over the top
But I enjoy people and life
Too much to stop
So, now I freely admit
Why I’m called “Overdo Di”
It’s a name and a fault
I simply cannot deny…
P.S.
Do come for a visit
Or even a day
There will be pies and new linens
For your welcomed stay!
