Keeping a Place Warm

See my little hand keeping the pane warm
It's here every morning of every day
Hoping to match your hand's form
Since that day you went away.
Like each morn you left through the door
But each afternoon you came back
Hung up you coat, left your shoes on the floor
And kisses and hugs I never lacked,
So I don't understand what changed your mind,
Why you didn't return and left mom to cry
So I leave my hand print to remind
You that if you give it a try
You can once again warm this window
With your large hand and turn the knob.
I won't be half an orphan, mom half a widow
And we will no longer have to sob.
We've looked at the places you've been
But the police say you're missing
Mom and I pray to find you safe and again
We can return to hugging and kissing

Author Notes
This is not autobiographical. It is just what I feel a young child would
feel if a father went missing
