I came at the noon when you were awake But left without speaking for your own dear sake Lest my words sounded harsh and brought you to tears To cause you more pain was the worst of my fears . I came as the sun stooped low in the sky The door stood open and now I know why. They all were within and ringed round your bed Your face was angelic. Your dear soul had fled. Now I shall visit where none can refuse Bringing you flowers the best I could choose. Roses and violets but sweetest of all Little, white daisies so pure and small.
