A response to attacks
Whenever Terror Strikes by Sis Cat
Sonnet Poetry Contest contest entry

Whenever terror strikes, wherever death
enshrouds the land, its people live in fright
of crowded places. Masses hold their breath.
Perhaps another truck will crash tonight.

We gather, hand in hand, for loss enshrined
or hold aloft the candle's golden flame.
The dripping wax upon our skin in-kind
recalls our lives will never be the same.

In time, surviving souls absorb attacks
and life returns to norm when peace beguiles.
Instead of crowding exits, folks relax
and force upon their lips distracted smiles.

With each attack, our fears emerge again
when terror’s guts and gore bestain the slain.

Author Notes
I wrote this because I needed a rhyming poem on human rights in China, terrorism, or the environment to submit to The Society Classical Poets Journal "Issues of Our Age." I recently witnessed a poetry event I was attending cancel before I arrived because it received a vague email threat which caused all of the poets to withdraw. Fear and terror plague our lives. The recent truck attack in New York broadened my poem from a personal experience to a universal one.
