What's Death? Tommy Wants to Know by Brigitte Elko
Poem of the Month contest entry

My grandma died not very long ago.
Where she went, I just don't know.
Grownups cry and look all sad.
I run and play but feel real bad.

Grandma was sick for a week or two.
Mom called 911, the emergency crew.
They took Grandma away on what looked like a sled.
The siren screaming, I ran and hid under my bed.

No one has the time to talk to me.
Wish Grandma were here and could sit on her knee.
She'd answer my questions about anything.
"What's death? When I die, what do I bring?"

"Please God, I want to find Grandma now.
She died, so they say, please tell me why and how.
Is she in heaven up there with you?
Please, tell her I really need a talking to."

Author Notes
If a young child asks you about death of a loved one, it is difficult to explain. Just saying that they are in heaven doesn't seem to be enough.
