A Quatern
Out of Wedlock by tfawcus
Poem of the Month contest entry

Her arm's outstretched, her fingers, too.
The one, once loved, is bound for hell;
she's drifting down... Is this farewell?
The days grow dark, and hopes are few.

The sun's last rays illuminate
her arm... outstretched. Her fingers, to
sweet wantonness must bid adieu,
and weakly wave, accepting fate.

She tasted of forbidden bliss
and must endure confinement's rue.
Her arm's outstretched, her fingers, too,
still hoping that, with tender kiss,

the bastard's father will renew
the hollow promise made last spring,
on bended knee, with wedding ring.
Her arm's outstretched... her finger, too.

Author Notes
The Quatern is a sixteen line French form composed of four quatrains. It is similar to the Kyrielle and the Retourne. It has a refrain that is in a different place in each quatrain. The first line of stanza one is the second line of stanza two, third line of stanza three, and fourth line of stanza four. A Quatern has eight syllables per line. It does not have to be iambic or follow a set rhyme scheme.

I am claiming poetic licence to justify my slight modifications to the repeating line!

Bastard, of course, in its true sense - a child born out of wedlock.
