                 The Urban Pirate

A lure that no longer beckons me,
is a pirate's life the way it used to be.
Many young men crave dangerous play,
and seeking adventure, sail far away,
tempting fate, their own and others,
ignoring the teaching of loving mothers.
To be a buccaneer, rampaging seven seas,
seeking plunder and vengeance, was heaven to me.

As the years went by, I became more mature - but, alas, never wise.
And, along the way, to my surprise, I learned the value of compromise.

Piracy no more was mayhem, murder, high-seas raiding,
and the many other joys of marauding escapading.
Derring-do became derring don't,
What I would was what I won't.
I'm practicing that today in my own urban way.

There were better ways to misbehave, I determined
No more palling with slime and vermin;
I’d forgo their dirty sea dog ditties.
There’s ample evil here in the city.

It was time, to advancing years, succumb.
No need to connive with foul-smelling scum,

and their "Yo-ho-ho! and a bottle of rum!"

I've plentiful grog when I need to stay limber
(though there's nothing like rum to shiver yer timbers).
My storeroom is stocked with more grub than a galley,
and adventure a-plenty to delight as I dally.

Here in this town, foul intrigue abounds.
This intrepid faux brigand knows where it's found.
I have inside connections, with endless selections;

The dregs of depravity, e'er there for me,
 blissfully, in the comfort of my couch and TV. :o)
