I walked the unplowed fields today
along the fence that separates
my orchards from a neighbor's hay.
I straightened posts and fastened gates,
did what I could to make them stay.
I tried to skirt the square of stones
that marks Ma's final resting place,
but I was drawn by sweet cologne
of petals lying like pink lace
upon her plot where they had blown.
Magnolias were her favored trees
as always they burst first in spring
with branches flush with flowers, bees.
Each blossom, furled like folded wings,
would flutter down in any breeze.
"Oh, Ma," I whispered, standing there.
"You'd love your trees in bloom again
since they've perfumed the sultry air
and are profuse despite the rain."
I paused . . . to smell their fragrance, stare.
