A ghastly screech ripped into my dream. I bolted upright. A hyperawareness rang in my head. I shook my wife. "Get up, the smoke alarm, listen, the smoke alarm is going off. I dropped my feet to the frigid, wooden floor. I walked to her side of the bed and pulled the covers from her clutched hands. "Get up!" I shouted. She slipped from the bed and took my hand. I touched the bedroom door it was cool. We ventured downstairs. The main floor was cool. "Let's check the utility room. Don't open it." I touched the door it was...
