What to do When There's Nothing to Buy
A New Hat by Cass Carlton

I went out to buy a new hat.
No great tribulation in that.
But my taste residual
Is so individual
The selection left me quite flat
****************
I decided to make up my own
And so to the trimmings was shown
Oh! bliss! Rhapsody!
This surely would be
A hat of all hats alone.
******************
Should it be satin , velvet or fur?
None of these. What about straw?
I scrunched up a crimp in the brim
Then agonised over the trim
And whether
A feather
Or two
Or a few,
Set pertly in place would do.
*********************
I dressed up the anonymous brown
With taffeta swathed round the crown
Then a bevy of bows
And a pink cabbage rose
With a flyaway veil
Swept back in a tail
And it turned out perfection.
An Ascot confection!
*****************
The girl in the shop asked my name
And said she felt it a shame
She would not see me wear it.
I just couldn't bear it
And made her one exactly the same

Author Notes
This is a somewhat exaggerated version of my one and only venture into Millinery. I was unexpectedly invited to a wedding, and although I had a presentable dress I had no hat to wear. When I went shopping I couldn't find anything to suit, so I purchased all the necessary bits'n pieces to make one of my own design. It was wearable and lasted all summer through, finally retired with the onset of colder weather and a return to the dependable beret.
