when put back together.
Oversized tenderness recast to strength.
Patience to just expectations.
Forbearance to righteous anger.
Some bone and gristle to where guts were.
Guts to brain’s old home.
Brain where heart should be.
Heart tucked behind its new protector.
Scar tissue knits a secure structure.
Visibly unchanged. Infinitely tougher.

A stubborn will and courage to honestly face reality, IS changing oneself. There can be unintended consequences - like bitterness and negativity - but one can choose to keep noble things while embracing change.
