Though fear and dread of snakes is wrong,
they've scared me since a child.
But when my children came along,
they feared not tame nor wild.

They loved to scamper through the bogs
along the streams and lakes.
Each brought home frogs and polliwogs.
Sometimes they brought home snakes.

One day when we were on our way
to ball games by the lake.
My son said, "Yikes! I think today
my jacket holds a snake."

"It's on a hook up on the wall.
It really should be fine."
So on we go to play some ball
but silently I whine.

After the game and wide awake,
I drove home with my son.
"Go in the house! Bring out that snake!
I think you better run!"

Soon out the door came boy and snake.
He held it up with pride.
He gave a smile; I gave a shake.
Sssnaake whisspererrrr, he sighed.

Author Notes
I don't want to offend herpetologists, but I've been afraid of snakes since childhood when the boys in my neighborhood chased the girls with snakes. I was determined that my children would not be afraid of them.
This is a picture of my grandson. Maybe.....I did my job too well. haha
