a tomboy in childhood
Stevie by RodG
Childhood writing prompt entry

I met her in the summertime
while shooting hoops at school.
We quickly came to be good buds
both there and at the pool.

"I'm Stevie! Never Stephanie,"
is all she said to me.
Then she stole my basketball
and shot a downtown three.

She dribbled well with either hand,
leaped high, then shot and spun.
She whipped my butt in every game,
HORSE and one-on-one.

You should have seen her ride my board
fast down the steepest hill.
She'd twirl three-sixties overhead,
then land with utmost skill.

At the pool she'd do swan dives
off the highest board.
She'd challenge all the swimming stars
and never was out scored.

Although I always lost to her
in every duel we had,
she'd punch my shoulder afterwards,
"Better, Pete, not bad!"

I don't know why she had to change.
It happened suddenly.
The tomboy vanished, disappeared.
She now was Stephanie!

Writing Prompt
Write a rhyming poem about your childhood. It can be good or bad, happy or sad.

A "downtown" shot in basketball is a long shot that would warrant 3 points, not 2.
