she recycles
but not like most
takes everyday trash
transforms improbable pieces
into an invention
seen only by her mind’s eye
carefully and quickly
she crafts until recycling
turns into a scavenger hunt –
finishing touches requiring
buttons, knobs, paper clips, pins
ordinary items to most
become rocket boosters, wi-fi,
elevators, amplifiers –
whatever she deems necessary
to accomplish the task at hand
don’t ask what she needs
she only knows when she discovers it
something too long unused
and likely unimportant
now essential to her
onlookers kept at arms’ length
lest they make suggestions
neither wanted nor needed
and could interfere with
her stream of consciousness
when finally presented
the explanation far exceeds
that of the invention itself
charming everyone into forgetting
she just turned six
