Story Book Teddy Bear by Walter L. Jones

Gifts are passed from generation to generation.

Author Note: The talents of family the special gifts given are passed from generation to generation, the method may very, but it still happens, I honor this passing. Walt

Grandma would say:

You are so special
Like a story book teddy bear
you are always there for the
young and old in fear and joy
they come to you to hold
you are soft and warm
you do not judge just protect

In the land of life few will be
as lucky as I have been
every stray trusted and came
into my life looking with open eyes
in my arms they could cry
a comfort that erased the pain
hugs of pure belief and understanding

As the responsibilities of being a father and husband
fewer and fewer came as if they knew it was time to pass
this gift on to another member in my life
Those that crossed my path in sorrow
still seek the soft teddy bear
in me they find the memory and the touch
as always I accept the burden I still care

The mark of the father passed to the youngest son
burden of believing a gift and a cross the son now carries
for like me he is the teddy bear large of body strong of mind
yet soft as the softest day is, he honors all in life
hold the pain of time accepts all who cross his path
holds their fears and sorrow shares their load and pain
never judges or questions just accepts for who they are

"In an old letter from a shaky hand, with a crayon
illustration, I share the story with my son
no words are needed. We just both understand
it is not a rite of passage, it is part of becoming a man,
as the strays who have lost their way, a soft teddy bear
waits for them, a special comfort learned, at his father's knee."
