I wept and continued to weep 'til end of day
what horrors make a man jump out a window
to a hundred stories below?
body fills with overwhelming sadness, shock
buildings drop
tic-tock
of the clock
seems to mock
terrorists vile
brings no denial
stunned by the war-zone site
confusion then want to fight
few bodies, many pieces
searching never ceases
rescue personnel
trudge amongst death
empty and worn
but they continue on
masks hiding their tears and fears
driven by this act of aggression
look around
silence or tears
pictures begin to appear
survivors cry out in fear
have you seen . . .?
the dust settles
war-like images of wreckage
but one flag still remained
one small tree stood alone
no surrender!
we shake our heads at the thought
but the octopus-like tentacles of grief
have attached themselves to our deepest flesh
and will never bring relief

Thanks to rokinronda for use of the picture, "Fire in the Sky". Basically free verse with rhyme when it felt right and many terse lines to enhance the scene.
