A Daughter, Step That Is....... by mossmouse |
A daughter, step is the word used now, not of me but another long ago.
Life has not been kind and sometimes so has she. Like a hobbled Unicorn, beautiful and amazing but without the ability to run free. She has staggered down life's trails, searching for a bow To put in her hair, maybe red or maybe green, but a color to paint her heart Other than the black of the obsidian stone it has come to be. A stone fused by fire and hate and betrayal that cooked her life too tart. Lost in the world and herself, she despised the North Star, her way out Until the day it lit her life to the point of blindness for a season. As she sat and wept and tried to remember one good time but it would not come. But then there was one, a big enough step to give her purchase. She did climb and then fell, climbed and fell and fell again. A difficult time leaving Hell. Laying on her back with tears burning in her eyes, pooled like acrid water, she Arose one more time and placing one foot in front of the other she Walked onward, still a crooked path, but more hers than ever before. Shedding life's tragedies from her pack and putting the rest in a room forever locked until it would be safe to open and look the red eyes down with an unflinching gaze and rout the last remaining enemy from her life. It was a few years back I heard that laugh, that little girl laugh of wonderment, so resolute in its honesty but then it disappeared again. Now it is back but more in the mornings than other times, but back nevertheless. She has acquired a fleeting gentleness, a softness, as a kitten rubs a face but then a noise chases her away. So much ugly has been tossed out and replaced with pieces of the rainbow stored deep inside. 41 years she became last week and now there is hope. Hope that is for the strong because the weak refuse to believe that a life can be different. Hers is. I now see the Unicorn, amazingly free to romp and roam and stop and sniff the baby bunny and drink from a crystal clear, cool creek. My prayer is that she looks forward and not back, back at all the what-ifs! My plan is just to be nearby and be that dad, step that is. For you my daughter, step that is.
