Disguised writing prompt entry

They arrived at Greenwood early in the day.Donna's inheritance had included the country estate she was seeing for the first time. When Donna and Shooter drove up the overgrown lane leading to the entrance, the burled wood doors welcomed her. Gazing up at the once-lovely window shutters, her tears finally sought relief in free-fall. What was she doing here?

She had taken the first available flight to Quebec City, Quebec. The little town of Far Corner was near, kissing a corner of Montmorency Falls. She had been told to go there in a telegram received at her Mother's funeral. She had to tell her Mother good-bye, but had known a life-time of caring. Her grief foreshadowed the days ahead of discoveries, family secrets, and shock. It was time for the reading of a will about which she knew nothing. After all, they had lived a life of near-poverty.

Now, the shock settled in.The lawyer seemed so nervous and anxious. A mug of steaming coffee had been brought in...and her fingers laced around its heat. The assistant, with her slight frame, white hair, and kind eyes, apologized for yesterday's baked cookies. The lawyer began reading.

Donna, adopted at age two years, was sole heir. After hearing that, the will's content was of no interest to her. Adopted? Then who left this will's sheaf of papers? The lawyer, stopped reading."Miss Donna, did you hear what I said?" "Oh no, I'm sorry...continue, " she mumbled.

She was left an estate and enough money to last two life-times. The rest of the details was lost to her. She went outside, untied Shooter, and slid into the rental car. She drove straight to Greenwood.

Now, as she hesitantly knocked at her own doors, they were opened in a flurry of helping hands and hugs. The white-haired Mrs. Webster ushered her in.Orders were hesitantly given to sit and relax in the drawing room.

After a few moments, Mrs. Webster returned, patting her white curls, presenting a bowl of soup and a sandwich to Donna.Donna asked her if she worked there, or was she the lawyer's assistant?

Mrs. Webster smiled, pulling her into her tiny arms. "No, I don't work here, dear."

Suddenly the grand door knocker announced a visitor. Donna was so confused, she didn't know if she was supposed to open the door or just sit and stare into the recesses of her over-loaded brain.
She needed answers to her myriad questions.

Relieved when she saw her lawyer walk into the room, she felt further tears escape and fall to her lap.
Please...her heart could not take much more of this mundane chatter. "Please, sit down." Donna issued.

They sat in silence together. Her lawyer was sifting and sorting a stack of papers, smiling at Donna.
Donna hoped she was about to learn of her birth Mother or how she ended up here. Mrs. Webster took her hand.

Her lawyer began, "Donna, I'm your Mother..."
