As heartbeat pounds at eerie sounds
and soughing breezes' soulful sighing
stirs up our fears to sobs and tears,
there comes a sound to set God crying.
Was that an owl with deathly howl
or Satan's snarling, screeching minion?
Unearthly calls and brawling squalls
enshroud the Devil's dark dominion.
The banshee screaks and growls and shrieks
a fatal portent howled in warning,
and bleakest dreams with clamorous screams
mean Death shall toll the bell of mourning.
