Kids run away when their dad remarries.

When Cindy Sue and Danny Ray
devised a plan to run away,
they had to scale the metal gate
confining them to Dad’s estate.
Escape routes lay beyond the yard,
where their new step-mom stood on guard,
but she was chatting on the phone
and left the kids to play alone.

They were not pleased their dad was wed
to someone new, who shared his bed.
Their mom had died and they were sad
and didn’t want to share their dad.
Their step mom tried to be their friend
and promised broken hearts would mend,
but they felt Dad had done them wrong,
and they refused to go along.

They hadn’t planned where they would go,
for they were young and didn’t know
the obstacles a child may face
when on their own in a strange place.
The neighbor’s dog was big and mean.
They had to hide to not be seen.
Though streets were wide, and they were lost,
they looked both ways before they crossed.

The kids got tired and hungry too
and didn’t know what they should do.
But then, they saw their new mom’s car.
“I worried so, but here you are.
I’ve searched for you two everywhere.
You children gave me quite a scare.”
She hugged them tight and kissed them too,
just like their mother used to do.

Now Cindy Sue and Danny Ray
no longer want to run away.
They know their new mom really cares.
She loves them all and gladly shares
her time to meet their every need.
It's certain now that she’ll succeed
in being more than just a friend,
who helps their broken hearts to mend.
