I wonder what the waters hold
where heavens meet the sea,
beyond the farthest reaches of
all places I might be.
I've scanned the skies and searched the seas
for clues of what I'd find
if I could go beyond the bounds
of where I stand confined.
I've listened to the plaintive whales
for what they might reveal,
but all their songs are sung in code,
rejecting my appeal.
I even begged a weary wave,
"Please tell me, I implore,"
but no confessions did it make
before it died on shore.
I wonder what the waters hold,
if somewhere there's a key,
but whale and wave and sea conspire
to keep the mystery.
