Long dead soldiers with sightless eyes
Caricature of limbs reach for the skies
Standing together at heaven's gate
Brothers in arms - senseless fate

A German voice so rich and clear
Sang a Carol for all to hear
"Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright"

Sixty yards apart; trenches held men
War weary and wounded; crowded den
Freezing winter had stolen their will
Guns fell silent - no more to kill

Snow flakes fell, ground glistened
All soldiers of Ypres Salient listened
Allies and Germans shook each hand
Swapped photos on No Man's Land

Author Notes
Christmas Eve 1914 the enemy ceased fire, sung carols and became friends for just that special night. The War on the Western front was one of the bloodiest in history.
