The First Day of Spring

My eyes have espied shoots sprout through the ground --
soon petals of purple from each will abound
as I with the swallows and bobolinks sing
to welcome the sun on this first day of spring.

Swallows and bobolinks are both migratory song birds, the swallows famous for their annual return to the mission at Capistrano and the bobolink a favorite bird of Emily Dickinson and other poets.
