No Escape by adewpearl
The Words Are The Same contest entry

So distinct are my thoughts of that morning
with emotions I'll never escape --
my beliefs were destroyed without warning,
and I scream as remembrance takes shape.

In a fantasy I could be cheerful
as all darkness would soon be erased.
Like a child, I'd forget to be fearful
as my nightmares by dreams were replaced.

If a drug could obliterate mem'ry,
I'd inject it deep into my veins,
but no dream or no drug sets my mind free
from the horror that keeps it in chains.

Author Notes
This contest requires one to compose a poem that uses the following list of words. I took the allowed option of using only 9 of the 10 words:
distinct, morning, emotions, escape, beliefs, fantasy, darkness, child, drug, race.
Each quatrain has a syllable count of 10/9/10/9, and the meter is in anapestic feet, so each verse reads
dadaDUM dadaDUM dadaDUM da
dadaDUM dadaDUM dadaDUM
dadaDUM dadaDUM dadaDUM da
dadaDUM dadaDUM dadaDUM.

Finally, for any friends who might be concerned, this is a poem inspired by the list of words, not by any biographical experience. :-)
