My Neighbor's Dream

If I discount my neighbor's dream,
what does that say about my own?
If yearnings of another's heart
fall deaf on me and he's alone
to struggle through this mortal coil
while I ignore his life's turmoil,
what satisfaction can I find
when I've walked past one left behind?
How bright can my achievements gleam
if I discount another's dream?

Author Notes
"Mortal coil" is a poetic term meaning the troubles of daily life and dates back to Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy. Today we celebrate Martin Luther King's life of service and the dream he held for all his neighbors. My poem is dedicated to his honor.
