a heroic rispetto
Paterfamilias by AlvinTEthington
Write a poem about a horse contest entry
see author's notes for form's description and background

Did you, the horse that threw my mother off,
Destroy my father's life for years to come?
You seem so proud, so haughty and aloft;
Does your base mind know what I have become?

My father would not ride a horse again;
Years later I was left in my chagrin--
Although I was a child--kind, meek, and mild;
I had been told that your desire ran wild.

Author Notes
Before I was born, my mother had a riding accident that nearly killed her. My father, who adored horses, never rode again. We missed an important Southern and Western custom of fathers bonding with sons because of that incident.

A heroic rispetto is a complete poem of two rhyming quatrains with strict iambic pentameter and a rhyme scheme of abab ccdd.
