Fragrant Memories of my Mother by adewpearl

One drop of Emeraude she'd place
at each ear's base
with wifely skill --
I breathe it still.

Crisp sticks of dough-wrapped cinnamon --
her rolling pin
could magic make
when she would bake.

The bleach she scrubbed on kitchen floor,
the tea she'd pour.
Each cherished smell
remembered well.

My mother died when I was eight. I have no memories of sound, such as her voice, but several memories of smell, which studies prove is the sense that triggers memory the most.
