A medieval tale
Thankfulness by AlvinTEthington
Medieval Love contest entry
see author's notes for form's description

He seemed demonic, evil, but not man;
I did not understand why I was there--
Confessing heresy must be his plan;
They would submerge me; pull me by my hair.

If I survived, I would not be a witch;
If I were dead, what would it matter then?
Because of secret powers, I was a bitch.
There were true cures of old beyond his ken.

"Did you make well the King so long ago?"
He asked me that strange question at that time.
"When he was yet a child but nine years old?
And you were then accused of that grim crime?"

"I am a priest, but orders are not mean;
The King thanks you by making you a Queen."

Author Notes
Since there is no minimum word count or prohibition on poetry in the contest directives, this is a story told in sonnet form, as it would be in medieval times.

I am using the one syllabic pronunciation of "power."

This is an English sonnet. It is written in iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is abab cdcd efef gg. There is a turn at the ninth line, and a summarizing concluding couplet.

Often in medieval Europe, girls as young as thirteen were accused of being witches (they had learned herbal medicine from their mothers.) So when the girl cured the future King, they were about the same age.
