a modern sonnet about unicorns and fairies
How Fairy Dust Came to Be

Sunbeams at play on its gleaming white flanks,
the unicorn paused to sip from a pool.
Fresh water it lapped from the placid pond's banks -
soft breezes blew whispers, capricious and cool.
A fairy who wandered onto the scene
was drawn by the spell of this steed's golden horn.
She pledged then and there 'neath shade trees serene,
with glimmering gilt she'd soon be adorned.
Propelled by filigreed butterfly wings,
the fairy took flight, grabbed the beast's flowing mane,
and stole gilded particles fit for kings
to make for herself a glittering chain.
Since that fateful day she broke Unicorn's trust,
each flit of her wings sprinkles fairy dust.
