For Mommy, always

Displays I've seen worth thousands of dollars,
with L.E.D. lights and movable parts,
with animatronic Santas and elves
once reserved only for giant theme parks.

My mother had slightly different ideas
to spread Christmas cheer in our neighborhood.
She'd bring out the Glass Wax and stencils
and do what any good housewife would.

We'd sponge our wax over the stencils,
then after she'd gently pull them away,
revealed on our windows in Glass Wax pink -
candles, sleighs, bells in amazing array.

Each generation finds ways to express
what they hold dearest and want to impart.
My mother, as so many women like her,
used Glass Wax to show what was in her heart.

Author Notes
For you young ones, Glass Wax was a peculiar product, thick and Milk of Magnesia pink, that one rubbed on windows, let dry, and then buffed off with a cloth. At holiday times the company sold stencils, which you can still find on
ebay, to decorate one's sparkling clear windows. By today's standards, these designs were quite primitive, but in my mother's eyes, and mine, they were artistic masterpieces.
