I remember the grandeur of summer skies,
The feeling of awe at something so vast,
Learning the shapes of the constellations
And names they were given so long in the past.

Yet the greatest wonder of summer nights
Came not from the stars sparkling far away,
But instead from the flickering fireflies
Who lit up my front yard when we would play.

If we were lucky, we'd capture a few
As hundreds more fireflies flew through the trees.
They may not have outshone Orion's belt,
But they were as close as the cooling breeze.

God gave me the stars so I would feel small,
So I'd know His glory reached down from afar.
But then just to make me feel special,
He gave me a firefly caught in a jar.
