A Kitten and a Girl by C. P. Jacob Flash Fiction contest entry |
The city is bustling and loud. Everyone has somewhere they need to go. No one slows down or looks too closely at what's around them. And nobody notices the small furball sitting in a box in an alley. All of his litter mates are already gone, and he's sitting there alone. He can't jump out of the box, so he's stuck there, with no food, no water, and only a dirty blanket for warmth, which he's curled against.
A family is walking down the street of this city now. The parents are talking about what they need from the stores. Their child is glancing around every few seconds to take in the city. It’s so big and grand. She peers down an alleyway and sees a box. She looks into it, sees a dark blanket, then notices an orange kitten. She gasps, picks him up, the runs after her family.
