Alone, along a lonely road
away from all the city sounds.
I traveled through the winter snow
that gently drifted all around.

I spied him standing in the lane.
His almond eyes looked back at mine.
Impressive was this 12-point buck.
A noble beast of great design.

No cars were on the avenue.
He did not hurry to depart.
As time stood still that afternoon,
a peaceful feeling filled my heart.

Magnificent, King of the Hill.
His crown of antlers fiercely glow.
Outstanding beauty in the wild.
Survivor of the hunter's bow.

We watched each other through the snow
T'was only him and me that day.
He turned around, his nostrils flared.
With one last look, he walked away.

It took some time to realize
and celebrate the gift we shared.
All creatures great and small are His.
A harmony of life declared.

Though breathless from my pounding heart.
I ventured home to loved ones dear.
But mem'ries of that afternoon
bring joy and peace that's crystal clear.

Each time I drive that country road,
I sense the day that time stood still.
That instant when I saw the stag.
Magnificent, King of the Hill.

A memory that still brings joy and peace as I recall the time I shared a moment in time with one of God's amazing creatures.
