The Kentucky Derby Poem by Larry Ingle

So swift behooves..
In challenging quest!
competitive hearts..
Race their best!
A treasure to win!
One measurable test!
For equine ones..
The World's Best!

Author Notes
Soon after High School, in 1969, I started working at Churchill Downs exercising race horses, before I joined the US Army. It was an exciting job. I was hoping to become a jockey, but didn't want to ruin my health trying to reduce to ride races, so I settled just teaching them to break from the starting gates and learning how and when to switch leads and how to accelerate especially in the final stretch run racing from the quarter pole to the finish line (or wire) as they say. I assume being around thoroughbreds is what inspired this poem. Thanks for your reviews!
