A homeless man and his shoes

Shoes

by Pamusart

The homeless man's walking had worn out his shoes.
He'd eaten some food, but, preferred drinking booze.
His pockets were empty; his face was well worn.
To get to this corner, he'd walked through a storm.
He saw a young woman with obvious means.
She purchased a pair of expensive new jeans.
She hardly saw him, as, he walked by the store,
Although, he was there to hold open the door.

In her clueless mind, he can't ever exist;
Of course, she can't see his eyes filling with mist.
Abrubtly, there's
something that's caught on her heel.
She tumbled so roughly; it felt so surreal.
He put out his arm and, thus, steadied her fall.
He caught her in time, and, she soon left the mall.
Not one word of thanks ever passed from her lips.
But, as she walked by, she was making this quip.

"You'd better not touch me, you filthy old man",
She said with a venom, while slapping his hand.
He followed her out until she reached her car.
He wished he had money to drink at the bar.
A little girl sees that his shoes have some holes.
She knows that for winter, he'll need some new soles.
She sees that he's human, though, he smells of booze.
So, she gets her mother to buy him new shoes.

Poem of the Month contest entry

Recognized

My husband and I believe in helping the homeless. We have even given them our homes at the appropriate times. I have a success story about one. He was a good chess player and could maybe get himself back on his feet by giving chess lessons. He was homeless, sleeping in the Park among muggers, pimps, prostitues doing tricks and drug addicts dropping their used needles. He is now a well known author who is consulted by Hollywood producers to consult on chess scenes. He is a millionaire. There are people inside the possibly dirty homeless. Be kind to them. Most are just people who are down on their luck. We have helped many other homeless this way. Very few CHOSE to be homeless.

Thank you for reading my poem
