Clearing away the entanglements from our heart

Tender Persistence

by Liz O'Neill

I am grateful, Lord
For friends you send
To wrench the stubborn roots
Of weeds and wilderness
Which strangle my heart

And wrench, they must
For my heart has grown used
To the security
Of these entanglements
Which ensure no risk

Of having to stretch toward
The unknown
Of needing to let go
Of being blinded
By Light

Bringing with it
Growth and change
But You Lord, are persistent
And slowly with tenderness
Brambles of darkness are cleared away

That I may
Once
Again
Behold
The Son
