Who does not remember that wondrous tune?

The Ice Cream Truck

by RodG

We heard its song way up the street
as it approached our house that day.
I shouted from our screened-in porch,
"Don't drive by us! We're comin'. Stay!"

My sis and I skipped to the curb
and waving hands cried out to him.
"Stop here! We both have dimes for you!
Dreamsickles, sir. Please, two of them!"

There was a window in the truck
that had a pale pink canopy.
The ice cream man smiled out at us
and checked his freezer carefully.

Then once we had the paper peeled,
our tongues licked quickly catching drips.
But in the sun they melted fast
and most got smeared around our lips.

"Well, goodbye, kids," the nice man said
as he cruised slowly down the street.
That tinkly tune began again
to beckon others for a treat.
