Underhanded

by karenina

"Say, meet me at the field!"
My young heart skipped a beat...
I balked, but knew I'd yield,
then stood in summer's heat.

I saw you standing on the mound,
and felt my knees grow weak.
I held the bat and kicked the ground,
longing to hear you speak...

"Choke up" you shouted to me...
(as if I had a clue)
Chance of a hit was gloomy,
but I was struck by you!

Out of the corner of my eye,
hair gleaming, yellow dress...
the one I prayed I'd not espy,
your flirty, pretty, Tess!

You threw that softball far afield,
and ran into her arms...
for one brief second I concealed
my envy of her charms...

So far away, so long ago,
perspective's so much richer.
I see you clearly, Romeo...
you underhanded pitcher!
