The Missing Weapon

by pome lover

Myron Smith was a bully who liked to hurt cats
He chased them and hit them with his baseball bat.
He crippled a kitty that lived down the street;
The vet had to put the poor creature to sleep.

Today, after school, Jack and I called for Mazie;
She’s usually sleeping; our Mazie is lazy.
But we couldn’t find her; we looked all around
So we went inside, then a horrible sound—

 A screeching so loud—it was Mazie, I knew;
My books hit the floor, out the front door I flew.
“Where is my cat? Do you want me to beg?”
Then I saw, in a tree, Mazie hung by her leg!

 Jack heard me scream, grabbed the first thing he saw—
Frozen hamburger meat, on the counter to thaw.
The bully was laughing; I kicked at his shin.
Jack whacked him with ground beef, again and again.

We got Mazie down; she was shaking with fear
And even my tough brother, Jack, shed a tear.
She clung to my shoulder, that cat was all claws!
I soon disengaged her and checked her poor paws.

That night, during supper, the jerk, Myron Smith
Barged right in our kitchen. “What’d you hit me with?
My Dad’s gonna sue; he’s a lawyer with clout!”
I swallowed my burger. “Whatcha talkin’ about?”
