Seagull begs a bite

The Seagull and the Old Fisherman

by HarryT

Mr. Seagull saunters along the sandy shore
Never enough, he’s always wanting more and more
Beseeching lunching tourists for leftover handouts
Hunting for morsels dropped from travelers’ carry outs

Vacationers begged out, he moves on to the fishing pier
Screeches warnings to other ring-bills roaming too near
He struts proudly along like a lordly Boston Brahman
Approaches old Gus, he knows to be a kindly fisherman

Squawks his echoing, famished cry and squints his eye
Gus hearing the bird while forking his last bite of pie
The fisherman looks up, says, “Not today, Blinky. Scat!"
However, the gull, like a soldier, stubbornly stands pat

Ignoring the command, the bird toddles toward the old fisherman
Gus knows that the gull will be back with another ravenous demand
Blinky believes in the man’s goodness, the ring-bill has no distrust
“You win,” the old fisherman flips him the edge of his apple pie crust
