A chapter in the book Let's Laugh 5

Where Is My Muse?

by Barb Hensongispsaca

I realized one night as I tried to sleep
while laying awake and just counting the sheep,
why sleep wouldn't come by whatever I tried.
Deprived of good rest then my brain was so fried.

I had closed my door to my family and friends
(I just did not care if that one act offends).
I shut out the kids and then even the cat ...
shut down my mind to all wanting to chat.

I thought if alone then my writing would come;
but, my mind closed up, so I found that was dumb.
To birth all my poems, I needed the sounds ...
the laughter of kids, and the sights all around.

The birds in the trees even influence me,
they open my mind and allow me to see.
Ideas rush in then to fill my closed mind;
the thoughts then explode so I'm no longer blind.

I see before me the words that I must write,
my brain's finally working to my sheer delight.
To put it on paper, now this is the time
to block out the sounds while I get this to rhyme.
