Food glorious food

Feed the soul with food . . .

Feed the soul with food . . .

How sensual food can really be,
when eating we are free.
Fresh strawberries and sour cream,
how sweet that taste can be.
A tuna steak that's seared, then blanched
with peppercorns it's spread.
Smooth and creamy melting butter
over fresh baking bread.

Sage and basil pungent herbs,
help our cooking flavour,
makes a salad dance on our plate,
delicate to savour.
Mum's own favourite Eccles cakes,
a Lancashire delight.
Dad's sticky toffee apple sticks,
served on bonfire night.

Warm figs dipped in Cornish cream,
cumin seeds in veggie curry.
Black current jam made by my Mam,
and peaches poached with honey.
Balsamic mixed with olive oil,
dunked with soda bread,
Herrings soused, flavour aroused,
and cinnamon gingerbread.

But I love avocados best,
served just plain and cold;
Golden roasted sweet potato,
colourful and bold.
Dessert has to be homemade for me,
Chocolate mouse with walnuts,
Swallowed down with pink champagne,
all these tastes are flawless.

Just lately there has been too much of it, but this is a tribute to some great food.

Bonfire night - in England we burn a fake Guy Fawkes on a bonfire on November 5th, this is when Guido Fawkes, a member of a group of provincial English Catholics, planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Eccles Cakes - These are baked sweet crispy buttery pastry flat cakes filled with dried currants and mainly sold in the north of England.

Toffee Apples - often served on bonfire night, Appleâ??s covered in sticky set toffee and put on sticks.

Soused Herrings - Herrings soaked in vinegar and baked in the oven, a very old traditional Lancashire dish which was cheap to make.
