Life in retrospect

The road often chosen

by An Awakened Heart

I wake up early every day
to meet my new tomorrow
but in my mind, an inkling stays
relive regrets and sorrows

My what had beens, my would have nots
each adventure, my new passion
my story told, each step I tread
my soul left hollowed, ashen

I walk alone, three steps ahead
but fall back, two behind
I journey through, two eyes wide shut
and live life free and blind

Emotions take the best of me
as patience plays the fool
what need have I of providence
my pride and strong head rule

The years, some score... I've left behind
and have yet to find my treasure
though many times, I've found a bone
I live by foolish pleasures

I sit here now, with death I meet
he's offered one more chance
to live some years in penitence
or with Dante... inferno, dance
