Scotch Tape

by Maureen Sky

Been wrapping gifts all day,
Now on my third roll of tape, and my legs really ache.
Could not help but wonder about who first invented "Scotch Tape."
Pretty Christmas wrapping paper all askew,
Ribbons, bows and gift tags, too!
Gifts wrapped in all shapes and sizes;
With the hopes that each recipient is excited about their gift with no unforeseen surprises.
Went online to Google the history of "Scotch Tape" and to learn a bit of trivia to share Christmas day with my guests as they arrive.
Who knew?
"Scotch Tape" was invented by a man named "Richard Drew."
It was the 1930's and the word "scotch" was meant to mean "cheap or stingy."
Next came the invention of cellophane; clear plastic and clingy.
It was 1944, and Scotty McTape, a kilt wearing cartoon boy
became the company mascot.
On to my wrapping; this red bow will have to suffice on this gift box because it's all I got!
It's late, been wrapping all day
and, I must say my trusty "Scotch Tape" got the job done all the way!
Now when guests arrive on Christmas Day,
I can then share how smart I now am
Because I learned about the man
Who made the product that saved the day;
not just for me, but for all of you too!
Richard Drew, if alive today you
would be surprised to learn your invention is used around the world
and as tape dispensers unfurl,
"Scotch Tape" now comes in red, green and blue!
